Joanne's Juice

January 2003

Juice e-mail: Pacers@LincolnParkPacers.org

In September many Pacers ran the Aids Run/Walk as a team to support Cary Adams in remembering his brother Paul who died of Aids in November, 2001. (Check out the team photo in the photo section!) The Pacer support didn’t stop with the September race. Since then, Cary finished his long time goal of putting together a CD consisting of some of his classical piano pieces. He decided to make the CD in memory of Paul and titled it appropriately, “Sunsets”.  Cary’s plan was to give the proceeds from the sale of his CD to the Aid’s Foundation. Thanks in part to the many, many Pacers who bought the CD; Cary was able to contribute over $1000 to the Aid’s Foundation this month. Congratulations to Cary, for his diligent effort and finally completing his goal, and also a thanks to him for putting his beautiful music in a CD for us all to listen to!!!……Talent among the Pacers never ceases. Even though John Parisi is no longer a Pacer since he moved to Colorado several years ago, those of us who remember John have to be impressed with his recently released book, “Choices”, published by Trafford Publishing Company. John’s book can be bought online at www.trafford.com/robots/02-0842.html. There is also a short biography about John….so check it out!!!  Gordon McIntosh is working on a sequel to his first book, a mystery, which he must finish in order to get his first book published.  Gordon and wife Meredyth have gone to Mexico for the winter. Will this time away from his daily routine of retirement give Gordon the opportunity to finish his book? (As a side note, in December, Gordon also joined Janet Omer and Joanne Kaeding in a new age decade!!)  Other Pacer accomplishments include the marriage of Tom Hall and Diane Graham Henry on October 21, 2002. They met in the Pacers 9 years ago….so this decision to finally get married is an accomplishment indeed!!! Now the newly wedded couple are proudly showing photo after photo of their newly purchased Lincoln Park home, (most couples show photos of their babies??!)….. The Pacer holiday party in Stuart Schulman’s “luxury high-rise” party room was once again a success. We missed seeing several regulars who usually attend??, but enjoyed seeing Pacers who have been “away” for awhile. What a surprise when Cheryl (Dancey) and Richard Balough (another “met in the Pacer’s” couple) showed up at the holiday party with an adorable and well-mannered little girl in tow! Congratulations to Cheryl and Richard for their new family member!!!…..Urs Weber and Lori Soderholm have REALLY moved to New York. They were missed at the holiday party, but we have been blessed with their visits so often that it almost seems like they are still here in Chicago and just taking long business trips in between!! They will be back in Chicago the weekends of January 25th and 31st?!! …….It is also great to see Fred Weyer at many of the social events, but now we have to get him out on the path for the fun runs! How bout that thought Fred??!!!…….In the last juice, it was mentioned that Frank Nicholson was retired from Blue Cross, Blue Shield. Heard on the path is that Frank is back working for the insurance company on HIS terms, which means of course, lots of time off for running and mountain climbing. Frank is still running STRONG, finishing 3rd in his age group on the 2002 CARA circuit. His goal is to run hard until age 70—then what next??…..The holiday’s came and went quickly this year….Monica O’Hara entertained us at two holiday parties, Halloween and  New Year’s Eve. What fun her parties are, and what a great hostess she is! Monica planned these parties in addition to running a fall marathon in Moscow, one in Chicago, and hiking the Inca Trail to Macchu Picchu with Joanne Kaeding, Jennifer Leslie, and Deborah Bear. Check out the Pacer web-site for Monica’s review of that terrific adventure to Peru. …..Another holiday party giver, Brian Hicks, wins the award for the largest Christmas tree to ever grace a person’s home. For those who don’t know Brian, he lives in a condo with a living room ceiling that goes up and up and up….He filled that space with a tree that would blow your mind! How he got the tree in, lights on, decorated, and out after the holiday’s is a mystery??!…….We are all waiting, VERY IMPATIENTLY I might add, for SNOW!!! What is it with this winter weather? We did get a few dribs and drabs of the white stuff, but not enough to even cross country ski for more than a day.  Jennifer Leslie finally went out this year and bought X-Country skis and is all ready to go. Jennifer and Ted Kline had a trail run on her new skis about a month ago, but that small amount of snow is long gone. Many of us have our skis at the door, waiting…..waiting…..waiting??!!! Will snow ever happen in Chicago?? We may have to console ourselves with ice-skating for our winter sport this year…a skating party will be coming up soon, so keep checking OUR NEW PACER WEBSITE, http://www.lincolnparkpacers.org For more information, Dean Battistella invested some of his holiday time to write a new updated Pacer website. He did an awesome job, and the web-site will be a great “meeting” place” for the Pacers, to find out what’s going on. We will plug in the monthly newsletter, photos, social events, race times, etc. etc. Thanks to Dean for all his hard work, and to other Pacers who contributed to this effort……..The 2002 Trick or Treat Trot was a success once again, with a record number of almost 1700 participants. We will be giving over $3,350 to our charity, Chicago Youth Programs. Thanks to Debbie Hoegemeyer for all her hard work on the race during the year. Thanks also to all the Pacer who were out there volunteering on race day….Halloween is fun for all of us, as it’s a chance to dress up showing our “inner self”!! Kathy Schubert’s dog Joey did just that, thanks to Kathy, her owner. Joey dressed up in a serious cyclist costume, complete with helmet, goggles, lycra tights, and riding a miniature bicycle….All this was for the DAWG Wiggley Field Canine Costume Contest….All Kathy’s efforts won Joey a 1st place. Congratulations to our “canine pup of the year”!…..This is the time of year everyone wants to get “out of town”…The place of choice for many Pacers this winter is Oaxaca, Mexico, a wonderful colonial Mexican town in the south of Mexico….Gabe Minc and his family just returned from Oaxaca, and they gave us all rave reviews at Monica’s New Year’s Eve party….Gordon and Meredyth McIntosh will be spending a month living there this winter, taking classes and eating at the marvelous gourmet restaurants. Oaxaca is touted as having the finest cuisine in all of Mexico…Joanne Kaeding’s daughter, Kristin, has chosen Oaxaca for her February 22 wedding. It is of course a given that Joanne will be in Oaxaca at that time as a very happy “mother of the bride”. Cary Adams who has already vacationed in Oaxaca years ago, will return also in February to keep Joanne company!…..Jack Euske and Amy Schauwecker will also spend some of their honeymoon in Oaxaca and surrounding areas….They are getting married in California in March….!!!!  Anyone else heading south for the winter??? …Hal Olin is heading west, to Colorado for his annual ski holiday. He will be gone for two months, spending his time skiing and bonding with his family, who are also skiers….Janet Omer has been west several times this year, having a brother who lives in Las Vegas, and a sister who lives in California. During her last holiday trip over Christmas, Janet indicated that her vacation time was being spent sitting in a jacuzzi, running several miles a day at an 8 minute pace, with her sister’s dog (Janet being tugged along behind with a special dog leash made for lazy dog owners?!), and eating meals prepared by her brother in law...Tough life Janet!!!! …………Keep that juice flowing to Pacers@LincolnParkPacers.org. Happy 2003!!!!
