Congratulations to all those who completed the LaSalle Banks Chicago Marathon 2003. It was another perfect day for the runners, as well as for the volunteers and spectators. There were some super times set, including Urs Weber, who at the ripe age of 44 managed to run his best marathon in years, with a time of 3:11. It is always a treat to see all the visiting Pacers in Chicago to run the marathon… My belief of the Chicago marathon day holds true; Cary Pinkowski has a solid in with the guy upstairs! Chicago’s weather is ALWAYS nice on marathon day. The post marathon party at Bachino’s was again a success, serving us pizza, salad, soft drinks, and beer to hungry runners and volunteers. Thanks to Heather Ludlum for organizing the event and to the Pacer treasury for “footing” the bill!…..Running the Lakefront Marathon in Milwaukee on October 5 allowed Kate Handley the opportunity to avoid the Chicago crowds, and achieve her all time marathon PR, a time of 4:02, a good 20 minutes off her previous PR. Way to go Kate!! I see Boston looming in your future!!! ....The Chicago Lakefront 50K and 50 Miler, Fall Version was a huge success once again. It was held on Saturday, November 1st, starting at the 63rd Street beachfront. This race deserves mention because 2 of the 4 race directors are Pacers—Stuart Schulman and Aziz Uras. When the evaluations were tallied, this race came in first place for all Chicago races in 2003, (including Park Forest!!) Now that is bragging rights for these guys! Congrats to David Farley who ran the 50K in a time of 4:44… Several Pacers including Monica O’Hara, Rick Kennedy, and Kate Spencer ran the New York Marathon on November 2nd. Looks like they also had a great marathon day, maybe a bit warm by some standards. Dean Battistella, who seems to run a marathon a month, traveled to Venice, Italy for the Venice Marathon on October 26th.  Dean doesn’t seem to be any worse for wear after all his marathons, as he just keeps on running them…..For those Pacers who qualified for Boston 2004, good luck and have fun running throughout the winter!! I for one will be thankful on those cold and windy Sunday mornings to do my meager 5 or 6 miles and be home in the hot shower before my hands have a chance to go numb…..The September Aides 5k Walk and Run, organized by Cary Adams, was once again well attended by a large team of Pacers. This year the team actually won a first place trophy for the fastest team overall…no wonder with all the fast Pacers running—including 1st place overall, Matt Knoop! Way to go Pacers!!!  Kate Fitzgerald and Marshall Craig were in town for the weekend, and with those two in attendance at the race, it felt like the “good old Pacer days at the races!” ……There is one Pacer who is seen daily by thousands of motorists. When you are driving on the Kennedy Expressway at North Avenue, check out the runners on the billboard there…and you will see Ginger Semple among the group. Ginger stands out in the crowd if you take the time to look closely: she is in the back row behind the woman in the jog bra and hat.…..Now for some baby news! Congratulations to Dana and Brian Maurer who had #3, a girl, Addison Elizabeth, born at 8:05 am on September 18th. Congrats also to Michelle and Randy Flores, who had Antonio Miquel, also on September 18th, one minute before midnight!!! In addition, the Flores family moved into their first home only a few weeks later. They had plenty of help, as both sets of parents visited after the birth to help with the baby and the move. Mark and Mary Weilandt also had baby #2, a girl named Anya. We hope to see Mark and Mary at a Saturday breakfast soon, with their two babes in tow!!!……. For those who haven’t yet read John Parisi’s book, “Choices”, you better hurry up and get in line! “Choices” is #1 on the Best Seller List at all the Border’s bookstores throughout Colorado, even outselling John Grisham’s “Bleachers and “The South Beach Diet. It is a marvelously written book, and has had great reviews. John is hoping that his book will be picked up by one of the top publisher’s soon, and that he may have the opportunity to go on a book tour around the country. At the current time, John still lives in Colorado, is working on novel #2, and is nursing a back injury so is running just enough to stay fit. It seems the back stuff is contagious within the Pacer’s this year, inflicting the young as well as the old--Don Crosbie, Deb Bear (young), and Joanne Kaeding (old!!) …..One popular activity that Pacers take up when injured is biking. Stuart Schulman learned a lesson in reality a long time ago in regards to biking when injured. At first, Stuart resisted being called “a biker”! One time he was riding his bike, and almost collided with a runner on the path. The runner shouted at him, “You bikers take up the whole path”! Stuart yelled back, “I’m not a biker, I’m a runner!” That’s a goofy statement for someone riding a bike!!! The truth is, Stuart now proudly calls himself a biker!! In mid-October, Stuart, his girlfriend Diane, Jack and Amy Euske, and another couple, biked the Sugar River Trail in Wisconsin. The trail used to be railroad tracks, and until several years ago there was an annual September marathon held on it. …Jack and Amy will be buying a house and moving to the western suburbs soon. Is the next step buying baby furniture??…. The Pacer girls have taken several biking adventures lately. Janet Omer, Denise Debo, Denise’s sister Kathleen, and Joanne Kaeding all participated in the 2003 Apple Cider Century in Michigan, riding 25 miles on a rainy, windy, hilly course. It was fun, and definitely a keeper ride for next year!…. After several failed attempts due to bad weather, the Pacer girls finally made it to the Botanic Gardens on October 19th, a perfect sunny autumn day. Jennifer Leslie and her friend Tara, Amy Tompkin, Denise Debo, Debbie Hoegemeyer, and Joanne Kaeding parked their cars at Lake and Harms in Glenview. They biked to the gardens, and spent several hours looking at the fabulous African sculptures that were on display there. The girls also got to see the engineering talents of Debbie Hoegemeyer, who in the 90’s, worked on a permanent tent-like structure that is located on the Botanic Garden’s grounds. After the return ride to their cars, several hungry girls dined on sinfully good hamburgers and the famous block of onion rings at the original Hackney’s on Harms. How could they resist such a temptation?….. Biking in Paris was Kathy Schubert’s choice for a ride. She and her special dog, Joey, biked from Paris to Tours, France, and then attended the International Bicycle Conference, the Velo-City 2003. In addition, Joey recently won 2 Halloween costume contests. With his many wins over the years, Joey must have a whole collection of doggie awards and trophies!!!…At the end of October, Cary Adams, who recently celebrated the big “50”, spent a week in Nicaragua doing volunteer dental work-what a selfless hero! Would this be considered a work or vacation??.. Gordon McIntosh returned from several weeks in Spain, taking Spanish and seeing the sights…. Now he and Meredyth will be in London, then on to India for 2 weeks…. Joanne Kaeding and Jennifer Leslie spent 4 days in Scottsdale, Arizona, visiting Kate Fitzgerald and Marshall Craig. The Arizona twosome entertained Jennifer and Joanne with some beautiful and interesting treks on local mountain trails, leaving the two flat-landers with sore quads and backsides!! Kate swears the hikes were on mere molehills, and for her it was like taking a walk/run in the park!!! Goes to show you what living in hilly areas can do to your fitness level!!! Janet Omer once again decided to scrap any type of fitness vacation, and opted for the jacuzzi at her sister’s place in southern California!…..Deb Bear and Jim DesJardins flew to Mexico City, then took a very long bus ride down to Oaxaca in southern Mexico to celebrate Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead). It is a wonderfully interesting time to visit Mexico, to witness the Mexican people as they celebrate this important cultural holiday…
